ITA 2023 report

The International Terminology Awards are bestowed by the EAFT to promote research and development in the field of terminology with two awards: The International Award for Distinguished Achievement in Terminology for the best MA thesis and The International Award for Outstanding Achievement in Terminology Research and Development for the best PhD thesis.

For the 2023 edition of the ITA Awards, we received 13 valid submissions in 5 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian). The submitted theses were evaluated by members of the ITA Jury and 4 additional evaluators for the theses written in Spanish. The members of the ITA Jury emphasised that all submitted theses were of high quality. The authors have dealt with diverse topics related to terminology in their research.

For the MA level, there were 6 submissions (in alphabetical order):

  • Marlies Alber (University of Innsbruck) Covid-19-Terminologie im Katalanischen und deren Verwendung in Massenmedien: Eine exemplarische Analyse zur Bestimmung und Anwendung von Terminologie einer neuen Domäne in Regional- oder Minderheitensprachen;
  • Antonio Giovanni Contarino (University of Bologna) Neural machine translation adaptation and automatic terminology evaluation: a case study on Italian and South Tyrolean German legal texts;
  • Elisabeth Evers (Technische Hochschule Köln) Gendergerechte Sprache – Auswirkungen auf Terminologielehre, Terminologiearbeit und Terminographie;
  • Bianca Jacod (University of Bologna) Le lexique de l’escalade : Elaboration d’un glossaire bilingue français-italien;
  • María Araceli Losey León (University of Córdoba) Diseño macro- y microestructural e implementación de un glosario digital término-ontológico sobre seguridad marítima (inglés-español);
  • Antonella Petriglano (Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan) Percorsi di valorizzazione del patrimonio: la terminologia dell’artigianato materano.

For the PhD level there were 7 submissions (again in alphabetical order):

  • Klara Dankova (Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan) La néologie et la construction morphosémantique dans la communication spécialisée en français: les fibres chimiques entre la synchronie et la diachronie;
  • Jorge M. Porras-Garzón (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) El anglicismo terminológico. Consecuencias léxicas del uso de textos escritos en inglés en las clases de medicina en español;
  • Irina Kalinina (Université de Lyon; Latvijas universitāte) Equivalence in biodynamic osteopathic terminology translation in English, French, Italian, Latvian and Russian;
  • Nguyen Hai Duy Nguyen (Dublin City University) Translation and/in development: Promoting more effective policy interventions in Vietnam;
  • Malamatenia Panagiotou (University of the Aegean) Development of linguistic tools to investigate consumers' sensory perception and emotional response to food;
  • Giulia Speranza (University of Naples “L’Orientale”) From Unstructured Data to Terminological Resources in the Domain of Archaeology: Translation Quality and Formal Representation;
  • Federica Vezzani (University of Padova) Vers une « terminologie FAIR » : conception et implémentation de la ressource TriMED.          

At the award ceremony during the EAFT Summit 2023 in Barcelona The International Award for Outstanding Achievement in Terminology Research and Development for the best PhD thesis was given to Jorge M. Porras-Garzón (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) and The International Award for Distinguished Achievement in Terminology for the best MA thesis was given to María Araceli Losey León (University of Córdoba). Congratulations to the winners!
